Chorley British Sub-Aqua Club
Guidelines

Message from our Diving Officer

All diving and training should be conducted in line with BSAC safe diving practices and all training should be in line with the Instructor Manual. The following guidelines are provided to clarify some points that have arisen recently:

David Sheridan - Diving Officer, Chorley 304

TRAINING DIVING GUIDELINES

  • All dives to be agreed in advance with the Diving Officer (or in the DO's absence, with the Training Officer)
  • All training activities to be agreed in advance with the TO
  • The opportunity will arise occasionally to conduct diver training on an ad hoc basis (e.g., on a dive trip). This can be carried out without prior consent of the TO, provided it is conducted in line with BSAC standards.
  • Theory lessons can be arranged on a 1-1 basis to accommodate shift working or other commitments. this needs to be agreed in advanced with the TO, who may decide to be in attendance.
  • Upon completion of any training activities, the relevant Instructor should provide details to the TO so that Branch records can be updated.
  • Assessments should be carried out by a different Instructor than the one who did the training.
  • Dive Marshals and Dive Leaders need to consider the experience of the divers as well as the qualifications. New experience should always be gained under appropriate supervision/instruction.
  • Instruction to be carried out by Instructors who meet the requirements outlined in the BSAC Instructor Manual (see below)
  • All training should be progressive, in terms of skills build-up and depth at which these skills are practiced. This is equally applicable in the pool. It is not appropriate to be in the 5m end of the pool on a first lesson.
  • Visiting groups or clubs must sign in at the pool. Non-BSAC Instructors in charge of such groups will be required to provide evidence of insurance on an annual basis.
  • Where BSAC practice differs from other diving organisations (e.g., "OK at surface" signal) the BSAC practice must be taught as a base line, though it is also acceptable to explain and demonstrate alternatives.
  • All under 16s diving must be pre-arranged with the Diving Officer.
  • Responsible adult (usually the parent or guardian) to be in attendance at all times during training and diving activities involving under 16s

Welfare Guidelines

The governing body of Scuba Diving in the UK (BSAC) have devised a working policy that is aimed at ensuring everyone within a diving club is free and safe to enjoy their diving and training.  In BSAC's own words the aim of the policy is also to " assure parents and guardians that all reasonable precautions will be taken to ensure the safety and well being of young children and juvenilles who participate in the activities of the BSAC."

This policy has been adopted by Chorley BSAC and is currently being implemented.  An overview of 3 points is:

    • On a practical level it means that there is no tolerance of any form of bullying within the club, and there is a clearly defined method of dealing with it.

    • The policy means that club instructors have been checked  by the Crime Recording Bureau (CRB) to an enhanced level

    • There is a chaperone system for any child being instructed.

For any further information on the policy within the club I'm available on club nights.
